 | Most uf membranes for use with liquids have their pore sizes determined by taking a sample from each manufacturing lot and measuring the retention of various solutes. The error in the determined pore size can be relatively large (as large as 20 to 40%) but this difference is usually not significant in their intended application. |

 | Actually I used to determine the pore size by applying the various pressure to get the bubble point and by canter's equation I calculate the pore size. In this case I used to apply the pressure from the top of the membrane and then the pores which are filled by water(solvent), the water gets displaced by the air and that pressure I used to consider for the equation. It depends on the surface tension of the solvent considered. I also used the retention of a protein of 68kda mol.wt. Is it possible by retention of a protien we can determine the pore size? In that case how we can differentiate between the various pore size membranes. Is the method of applying pressure to determine the pore size that much more helpful than the other procedures? |
