It depends upon what your filter needs are.

For filters in the 10's to 0.1's of millimeters woven filters of Teflon, polypropylene or polyethylene are excellent choices.

For ultrafiltration (a.k.a. molecular filtration) your generally limited to PVDF membranes. The cellulose and cellulose ester type membrances are generally no useful unless there's enough water around to keep them hydrated.
