We produce viruses in 30 liter batches of cell cultures. Could you recommend a product suitable for removing eukaryotic cells from this material that will cause minimal loss of virus from the filtrate? There are 15 to 45 gm of cells in each 30 liter batch. Thanks

What is the size of the virus?

You want to choose a membrane that will allow the virus to go through but not the cells.  Of course all of our membranes will keep out cells so you just need to worry about the virus.  Of course after you get rid of the cells, you might want to choose a smaller membrane to purify and concentrate the virus.

A good choice for your batch size is probably Spectrum's Lab System (see http://www.spectrapor.com/filtration/syss/mklab.html). This is a hollow fiber system. You'll need to select the hollow fiber cartridge based on the size of your virus. You're probably looking for about 500 to 1000 square cm of membrane area.

For maximum recovery, you'll want to run the filter until the filtrate production slows and then add water to the material you're concentrating at about the same rate that filtrate is being produced. This maximizes the filtrate recovery at the cost of some dilution.

Thanks for visiting.
