| I synthesize polymers of about 5000-10000 g/mol,which are contaminated by an excess of terminated agent (small organic molecule).These polymers are solubles in organic solvants (THF or acetone and also in ehanol or acetonitrile); Do you think I can use dialysis membrane to separate the polymer from the small organic molecule? Is there a protocol to condition the membrane in order to use it in ethanol or acetonitrile medium? | | |

 | I don't know what your sample sizes are. If they're small (mL size) you might want to consider a centrifuge filter from Millipore (another company).
You can use the regular regenerated cellulose membranes in non-aqueous solvents if you don't get them wet first. Just soak the "dry" membrane in your solvent to allow the glycerin to dissolve out. The MWCO will, of course, be different than in water. I'd get a sample of Spectra/Por 3 (on-line at http://www.spectrapor.com/dialysis/spectra_por_3.html or by phone at 800-634-3300 from Gene Lizaso) and try it.
If you get the membrane wet and then try to use it in non-aqueous media, it will dry out and crack. |
